The Paleo diet is based on the diet humans have thrived on since the beginning of time – Protein, fat and carbohydrates – in that order. Only since the advent of farming grains have we altered the calorie proportions and started consuming more calories of carbohydrates than protein and fats. In the last 100 years, we have been stripping any nutrition from these grains as we have created “processed foods”. These “convenient” processed foods have been contributing to the obesity epidemic taking over all industrialized societies. Humankind was not designed for a carbohydrate heavy diet and the declining health and weight gain of the majority is a direct result.
In addition to grains, flour and “foods” composed of them, we have also been pouring on the carbs with sugar and HFCS – high fructose corn syrup. This significantly adds to the carbohydrate overload. Both sugars and grain based carbs spike blood sugar when eaten. Insulin must be released in mass to counteract the high blood sugar levels and this yo yo effect causes our bodies to store fat instead of using it for energy. It also contributes heavily to type 2 diabetes.
Breads, cakes, cookies, crackers, chips, white rice are some of the highly processed foods that no longer resemble real food or contain any substantial nutrients. Our body requires nutrients to function optimally. Junk foods, fast foods and these other highly processed foods cause more harm than they do good for our bodies. In computer programming there is a saying “garbage in, garbage out” – it is a good analogy for the human body also. Besides being devoid of nutrition, they subject your system to toxins like preservatives, pesticides, herbicides, artificial colors and flavors and many other nasty chemicals.
Look at your grocery store shelves. 90% of what you see is unhealthy, processed foods stripped of any nutrition the ingredients may have had before “processing”. With the rise of processed foods is the rise of obesity, diabetes, cancer, heart disease and many other conditions. The majority of people taking prescription medications are merely treating the symptoms of conditions brought on by poor nutrition, lack of exercise and stress. Prescriptions seldom cure anything but they all have side effects, many of which are worse than the condition they treat.
The Paleolithic diet abbreviated paleo diet or paleodiet also popularly referred to as the caveman diet Stone Age diet and hunter.… Ever see a picture of a fat caveman? No, because they ate what their bodies were designed for – a paleolithic diet. They were hunter / gatherers and did not eat or farm grains. The fact that our “modern” farming methods has stripped our soils of the necessary minerals and biodiversity of a healthy symbiotic soil does not help either. That is why the Paleo diet is making such a splash – because it works. All the diets that show promise are based on the low carbohydrate diet – South Beach diet, Atkins diet… They also have the weight loss benefits of being ketogenic – forces the body to burn fat for energy rather than store it as fat.
Paleo diet recipes are easier to prepare than most meals. If you or a member of your family suffer from obesity, food allergies, poor digestion and/or elimination, lack of energy or poor health – try the paleo diet plan. You’ll find many of these issues will disapear and you will feel vibrant and full of life. Replace junk snacks with paleo snacks and you will be amazed how well your body functions. You have nothing to lose but weight and poor health. Give the paleo diet plan a try.
