The “Cost” of Eating Healthy

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off

[ Note: This article was written by fitness and nutrition author Jon Benson. I have his permission to share it with you. ]

One of the biggest myths out there is the myth that eating healthy costs too much.

Just the opposite… and I’ll prove it to you in three ways.

#1: Cash

Here’s some sample figures courtesy of my friend Scott Tousignant’s fitness blog…

2 medium size sweet potatoes $1 or… small fries from a fast food joint

2 red peppers $1 or… a can of pop

Bowl of oatmeal with fruit & protein powder $2 or… large bag of chips

6 Chicken Breasts $10 or… a sub combo from a fast food joint

18 eggs $3.50 or… a burger from a fast food joint

2 salmon fillets $15 or… large pizza

Loaded chicken salad (homemade) $3 or… bag of cookies

Large bag of oatmeal $3.50 or… 4 chocolate bars

Not much of a comparison, it is?

Yet the foods on the left would feed a family of two or more for 4-7 days… the foods on the right? 2-3 days if you live through it.

Tips to make the most expensive part of eating healthy — the cost of quality meats — go further include…

1. Use tofu fillers in chicken and beef recipes. Even if you hate tofu, you can barely taste the difference when combined properly.

2. Buy your meats in bulk online. You can find less expensive grass-fed beef and naturally-raised chicken and have it delivered to you if you live near a large city. If not, check the local farmers.

3. Eat meat only 3-4 times per week and use black beans with rice or inexpensive tuna for your other days. I eat tuna cooked in a skillet with lots of veggies and some olive oil almost every night and I LOVE the taste!

My book The Every Other Day Diet has over 40 pages of recipes in it to help you eat healthy and cheap… and you can still eat out and consume your favorite foods several times per week.

#2: Your Health

Do we ‘really’ need to talk about buy new (usually larger) clothes every year or two? Or about the health care costs associated with being even 20 pounds over your ideal weight, let alone more? How about the time you miss from work with excessive colds?

Eating healthy and taking care of your body adds years to your life… and for the record, the years eating poorly takes away from your life, on average, costs each American over 80,000 in medical expenses.

Want to add that to your food budget?

#3: The Big Picture

Anyone who has been fit knows the joy it brings… the freedom you feel from wearing whatever you want… the productivity you see from increased energy… the pace at which you move during the day.

Not only are these gifts priceless, but they are also massive cash-savers. Your productivity alone can add thousands to your bottom line each year, well off-setting any costs associated with eating quality food.

The Bottom Line…

Like any good accountant would suggest, you need to look at your ROI (return on investment) if nothing else.

What does investing in a better body, greater health, and vibrant energy do for your life? How can that actually translate into more income AND less expense?

You will be surprised.

Remember:
Don’t Quit. Get Fit!

P.S. If you want some tips on getting started with shedding that excess weight… go here for a short video… and prepare to take some notes! …

6 Strange Dietary Bedfellows

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off

[ Note: This article was written by fitness and nutrition author Jon Benson. I have his permission to share it with you. ]

What do these six things have in common?

– McDonalds
– Renée Zellweger
– Epileptic children
– Yours truly
– Most bodybuilding and fitness competitors
– Kiefer Sutherland

Give up?

All the above employ the strategies of the low-carb dietplan.

Recently researchers have found that low-carb nutrition plan reduced the number of seizures in epileptic children.

Most of the world’s leanest physiques get that way on a regimen, limited or not, of low-carbs and higher protein.

Even McDonalds is getting into the act.

Even Renée Zellweger.

Even Kiefer Sutherland.

Even me.

Kinda.

Read on and I’ll explain what I mean…

———————————————————————-|

Why Low-Carb Works

———————————————————————-|

When McDonalds starts counting carb grams in their food, you know someone is either jumping on a trend or finally seeing the light.

In this case, both — but it is a good thing. Low-carb dietplans. They work.

For the masses, they work because they are the easiest nutrition plan to follow when you’re busy.

McDonalds and stars like Kiefer Sutherland figured this out. The busy on-the-go guy or gal doesn’t want to make the time to prepare six meals per day and carry them around in Tupperware.

When choosing my own lifestyle nutrition plan, time and convenience played a major role. I looked at role models who were very busy, formerly obese, and very lean.

Most of them rely in some form or fashion on a low-carb strategy.

Low-carb also works, much to the hem and haw of traditional doctors and nutritionists, due to the way the body processes fuel.

For those of us fortunate enough to grow up on whole grains and very low-sugar mealplans, a moderate to higher-carb nutrition plan may work just fine.

But most of us grew up eating junk.

Processed foods, fast foods, and downright junk was the cornerstone of our dietplans. That puts your body on the “carb defense.”

After years of abuse the body becomes resistant to carbohydrates. The insulin they produce can cause all sorts of health issues, fat-burning problems, and more.

When carbs are removed, even healthy carbs like whole grains, the body has time to re-adjust.

In some cases, you can go back to a moderate-carb plan with whole grains and fruits after a period of time.

In others, you are a “low-carber” for life.

Guess which one I am?

Finally, low-carb works because you tend to eat less. Fat is very satiating, and most low-carb plans are fairly high in dietaryfat.

So, in recap:

— Easy and convenient;
— Metabolically important for carb recovery;
— Lower in total food volume (eat less)

Do not make light of that first point. Any plan that is not simple is one very few people will stick to. Making your plan simple and tasty is key, even if that plan is not “perfect” by nutritional standards.

Now, by far, the best low-carb dietplan in the world (yes, I’m bias for good reason!) is this:

click.here ——> My Favorite Foods Diet Presentation

EODD works so well because your carbs are low for “most” of the time. Not “all” of the time. And the times when your carbs are not low you can enjoy your favorite foods.

Personally I enjoy pizza and burgers on my non-low-carb days. You can enjoy whatever you want if you just keep it reasonable.

You see, there’s no need to diet-perfect.

Progress always trumps perfection.

———————————————————————-|

Why Low-Carb Fails

———————————————————————-|

There are two primary reasons for the failure of the low-carb nutrition plans: boredom and media bashing.

One causes irritability. The other, doubt. Unless you’re certain that your plan will work, you will eventually go off of it.

This is true of any plan, no matter how ideal it is. Certainty rules.

That’s why I believe in having a flexible, tasty plan like EODD.

Then boredom is easily solved.

I share my own unique ideas about “cycling” carbs and fats in the presentation here:

click.here ——> My Favorite Foods Diet Presentation

Using my cycle strategy you will rarely if ever become bored. And your body will burn more bodyfat too. It’s just a cheap metabolic trick…but boy, it works.

The second reason is media and medical bias. One study after another has proven that low-carb plans, even the Atkins plan, works and is safe to use for most people.

Check with your doctor first, of course.

I’ve seen researchers get down-right angry when the results come back. In one study, carried out for a full year, the low-carb plan out-performed the so-called “healthy” Dean Ornish plan.

Lower blood fats, more weightloss, and more energy were the results.

My preference always comes back to low-carb nutrition. I just cycle it in a way that allows me to get plenty of veggies, some grains, and ample fiber.

Even a slice of cheesecake here and there… : )

Hey…I said “low-carb”, not “low-life!”

Yours In Fitness,

J O N   B E N S O N

P.S. One of these days the mainstream medical community will wake up to the fact that 90% of the population will never eat 15 servings of veggies per day.

While this may be “optimal”, it’s not at all practical. I’d rather give you down-to- earth practical nutrition advice that you CAN and WILL follow — and enjoy.

Makes sense, doesn’t it?

A Candle In A Dark Week

Unless you hitched a ride on NASA’s Lunar Orbiter, you’ve heard the news.

In a single day, we lost two people that almost everyone in this country, if not this world, felt as if they knew personally.

In the same week, there was a candle flickering in the darkness.

A candle fueled by science. By research.

By hope.

We lost Farrah Fawcett to cancer. But this week a promising new cancer drug has a large number of folks highly optimistic.

And of course we lost Michael Jackson. We don’t know why yet. I wonder if we ever will.

But still, the candle burns.

The light here is a light of reckoning. A light that says, “You are but dust in the wind.” To dust, we return.

In a sense, at least.

You are also the stuff of stars.

I’m not talking about movie stars — I mean literal stars.

The inspiration for this article comes from one of my personal heroes, Carl Sagan. In his brilliant book, A Demon-Haunted World, Carl brings is wit, intelligence and sobriety to bear on the candle in the darkscience.

Science has helped liberate us from the dark ages, literally.

Science has cured more people in a single generation than all the wars in “history” have taken. Can you believe it?

During this dark week, science enabled us to launch the most sophisticated lunar probe in history to the moon.

And science will eventually find a cure for that monster we call cancer.

But science may never find a cure for what killed the King of Pop.

You see, I don’t think it is as simple as it seems. It may be. Who knows. But I think Jackson died of loneliness and self-abuse.

It just took time.

That, combined with stress (the number-one killer in the world) is enough to do anyone in.

The candle in the dark? Managing your health is really under your control… more than you think. That includes your mind.

Not totally, but in a few years, who knows.

That’s a candle that burns bright to me.

Brighter than the sun.

A bit of honesty:

My first thought upon hearing Jackson died was, “Wow. Too young. How?”

I’ve always recognized his contribution to music, but I’ve never been “attached” as a fan per-se.

When Kurt Cobain died, I cried. When Gene Roddenberry died, I cried. I cry every time I watch the end of “Contact” that just says, “For Carl.”

When Michael died, I shook my head in disbelief, skepticism, and reflection.

My candle was burning at both ends, I suppose.

How fragile we are. Yet, like Sagan loved to say, we are all “starstuff.” Literally.

Every atom in your body with the exception of hydrogen can be traced to a red star, billions of years old.

That makes me hang my head in utter awe. How beautiful, yet how chaotic our universe and our lives seem to be.

The reason I do what I do is not to try and extend “just years” to your life — it’s to help you make your life the best it can be.

To extend the healthy, happy, joyful aspects of your life.

To give you the candle in the dark called “self-management”.

Your time can come in a snap of a finger. In a breath, your light can go out.

But until then, I urge you to fight the good fight.

And keep your candle lit for all the world to see.

Fit Bits: This Will Kill You. Really.

Inflammation.

That’s the ticket. That’s the answer.

That’s what you must address if you want to live a longer and more productive, healthy life. No ifs, ands or buts.

Inflammation is caused by insulin resistance, among other things.

I’ve decided to share this week’s Fit Bits with you in an entertaining video I made called “Low Carb Lunacy.”

Get ready for the facts like you’ve never seen them before…

Please press the Play button to start the video. Thanks!

P.S. For those of you who really want to take charge of your health, I do encourage you to adopt a dietary plan you can live with. The best I know of is found below.

Fat Head – More Government Lies

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off

Ever noticed how with all the government sponsored “science” on diet and heart disease, that America is getting fatter and heart disease is growing?  Politicians are pushing their own opinions and agendas on the public and punishing scientists that do not agree with their ideas.  The McGovern report and Ansel Keyes low fat, low cholesterol diet are the basis of this bad “science” that is being shoved down our throats by the FDA, USDA and the CDC.

There is a movie coming out which challenges these “truths” with common sense and objective science, not agenda based lies. How can they justify their proposed tax hikes on the foods they determine to be bad when the science behind their propositions is proven faulty?

Low fat diets do not prevent obesity or heart disease.  Cholesterol does not cause heart disease.  If small minded politicians have their way, we will all be vegetarians. They are probably loading their portfolios with stock in soybean tofu farms. Once they legislate their profits (and fail to pay the taxes us common folk are held to) they will be rich and not pay their “fair share”.

Enough criminal, I mean politician bashing. The point here is what is and has been shoved down our throats as “fact” is merely opinion. Scientists are afraid to speak up because politicians control the grant monies and only distribute the monies to scientists that agree with them. No wonder weight loss has become so hard for people when the weight loss programs are based on bad data.

Lets bring back common sense and objective science. We are not sheep, we can think for ourselves. Don’t let government control us as subjects, they work for us, the voters. We need to wake the voters up if we want to take back our freedom of choice.

Remember the government telling us eggs are bad, salt is bad, butter is bad – margarine, vegetable oils and low fat diets are good? Well that junk “science” sky rocketed heart disease and obesity.

There are a few doctors and scientists speaking out and trying to right this wrong thrust upon our society. If a weight loss diet isn’t working, try a low carb diet instead of a low fat diet. Eat meat like our bodies require and get the nutrients that you cannot get from other foods. High quality protein, B12, omega3s and more.

Diet Tips for Fast Weight Loss

Here are 101 diet tips for fast weight loss and fast fat loss. It is far more important to lose fat than lose weight. Body weight should consist of less than approximately 20% body fat. During a fast weight loss diet, if it is not done correctly it can reduce muscle mass, especially if you are trying to lose weight fast. Muscle burns fat even during rest periods so it is obviously a good thing to maintain muscle while trying to lose weight. Fast diets and quick weight loss can cause you to lose muscle as well as lose pounds. That is why it is important to supplement with high quality protein to avoid muscle loss during a quick diet / fast diet.

These tips for diet are general recommendations as everyone is different and responds differently to weight loss diets based on age, gender, genetics, health, medications and a multitude of other factors. As always, check with your doctor before making any radical changes to your diet plan and “listen” to what your body tells you. Generally you do not want to lose fat at a rate of much more than 3 pounds a week. Toxins are stored in your body fat and by losing fat fast, you are overloading your body’s detoxification mechanisms – liver, kidneys, skin, bowels, lymph and other systems. The rest of your body suffers through the elevated toxins also – brain, organs, blood so it is best to go at it slow and steady and drink plenty of water. If you feel ill from the toxins from a weight loss diet, slow it down.

Basic Principals for Healthy Weight Loss are:

  • Slightly reduced caloric intake
  • Exercise to burn calories and increase metabolism
  • Healthy foods – plenty of fiber, fruits, vegetables, quality protein
  • Eating several smaller meals rather than one or more large meals
  • Adequate sleep
  • One or more bowel movements a day
  • Approximately 1/2 oz water per pound of body weight per day

101 Diet Tips to Lose Pounds

  • Don’t eat if you are not hungry – out of stress, habit, emotional need…
  • Avoid all sodas, especially diet sodas – empty calories and chemicals
  • Avoid foods with MSG – makes you add fat to your body
  • Eat to live, don’t live to eat
  • Drink tea to burn fat
  • Consider the Best Weight Loss Supplement to lose weight

  • Eat negative calorie foods – celery, apples… more calories to digest than consumed
  • Drink at least half an once of water per pound of body weight per day
  • Eat breakfast, high protein – most important meal of the day
  • Don’t drink much liquids with meals – it dilutes stomach acids for digestion
  • Eat slowly, let your stomach catch up to your hunger (20 minute lag)
  • Chew food thoroughly for better digestion and assimilation
  • Add healthy foods to your diet – more fruits and vegetables
  • Remove unhealthy snacks and deserts from your diet
  • Do not eat for at least 3 hours before bed
  • Eat smaller portions, more meals if needed
  • Avoid night time snacks
  • Instead of skipping a meal, drink a protein or “greens” shake
  • Visualize yourself being at your ideal weight / body shape
  • Avoid soy products unless fermented – unnatural and raises estrogen levels
  • Whey protein instead of soy protein drinks
  • Spice up your foods – increases saliva and blood flow
  • Sea salt / crystal salt – replace your sodium chloride chemical salt
  • Stock healthy convenience foods – nuts, yogurt, kefir, fruits…
  • Eat raw fruits and vegetables – cooking kills healthy enzymes
  • Eat food in season locally
  • Eat organic when possible
  • Avoid processed foods – generally in a bag, box or can
  • Go easy on simple carbs – high glycemic foods cause insulin spikes
  • Don’t supersize
  • Exercise / be physically active, walk, take stairs not elevators…
  • Eat at the table – not at computer or watching TV
  • When eating, focus on eating, not random thoughts
  • Buy only healthy foods when food shopping or eating out
  • Avoid fake fats – margarine, miracle whip – eat butter and mayonnaise
  • Avoid fake sugars – aspartame, Nutrisweet, Sweet and Low…
  • Avoid unhealthy Omega-6 oils – corn, sunflower, canola, soybean, peanut and safflower
  • Use healthy oils – olive oil, coconut oil
  • Limit white sugar, flour, bread, rice – nutrition has been stripped away
  • Reduce stress – causes the hormone cortisol to be released (stores fat)
  • Be happy – does not interfere with healthy bodily processes
  • Be aware of eating triggers – stress, conflict, bad relationships, self worth
  • Chart your weight loss weekly
  • Don’t skip meals – have a meal replacement shake if necessary
  • Don’t go into a meal starving – light snack before hand
  • Get a full nights sleep
  • Watch alcohol intake – mostly empty calories
  • Boost your metabolism – get adequate iodine or iodide for your thyroid
  • Consume plenty of fiber to aid digestion and elimination
  • Use a smaller plate / smaller portions
  • Avoid pasteurized and/or homogenized milk – no longer natural
  • Eat eggs – perfect protein, Omega 3s…
  • Smoothies with yogurt and/or kefir and fruits or frozen fruits
  • Skip dessert unless it is healthy – most desserts are not healthy
  • Whole fruit is better than juice – fiber moderates glycemic spike
  • Eat fruit and vegetables with every meal
  • Enjoy your food – savor the look, taste, smell, texture
  • Have at least 1 bowel movement a day – (fruits and veggies)
  • Whole grains
  • Do what works for you – everyone is different
  • Reward yourself – new outfit for your smaller size
  • Want it – make it a strong desire to lose fat / weight
  • No HFCS – High Fructose Corn Syrup – unhealthy sweetner
  • Set realistic weightloss goals – 2 to 3 pounds per week
  • Get adequate nutrition – supplement with a natural multivitamin/mineral
  • Get a decent scale
  • Take before and after pictures (maybe some in between)
  • Read “Power Aging” by Gary Null PhD
  • Build more muscle – weight training or other strenuous activity
  • Don’t compare yourself to anyone else
  • Hypnosis / self hypnosis may work for you
  • Find an exercise / activity partner
  • Fill your subconscious mind with positive subliminal messages
  • Mix it up – your diet and exercise
  • Beware of the “foo foo” drink – Lattes, frappucinos, caramel coolers…
  • Before you indulge, ask yourself, is it worth it
  • Drink ice water – your body burns calories maintaining body temp

Some of these diet tips to lose weight fast are probably foreign to you. They buck the traditional bad advice of the mainstream media and medical doctors. Remember – eggs are bad (cholesterol) – wait, now eggs are good again, butter is bad – margarine is good – now butter is good again and margarine is bad (trans-fat). Salt is bad (sodium chloride is bad), natural sea salt is not only good for you, it is absolutely necessary for life! Remember lard (animal fat) is bad, vegetable oils are good – NOPE, another complete reversal – vegetable oil throws off the Omega 3/6/9 balance. If you have been following their advice, your health will be suffering. Notice how heart disease has continued to climb despite all our “food science” ? How about another “brainchild” idea – we have an iodine shortage in our American diet which can cause hypothyroidism among other problems, lets supplement table salt with iodine, then tell everybody to avoid salt – what sense does that make?

As a general rule, the less man messes with a food, the healthier that food is. Somehow “scientists” think they can out do our creator and “improve” upon foods. It is getting scarier with genetically modified foods (Frankenfoods). Microwaves are another “advance” in science – there is controversy over their safety. I personally use them as little as possible, something about vibrating the atomic structure of the food does not appeal to me.  NEVER microwave food in plastic containers or covered or wrapped in plastic wrap.  Any fats or oils interact with the plastic and leach BPA at an accelerated level.  BPA is a chemical which mimics estrogen (yes – the female hormone) and causes weight gain as well as unbalancing healthy hormonal levels in males and females.

There appears to be many factors that affect weight gain (fat in this case):

  • More calories consumed than needed
  • Hypothyroidism (slow metabolism) caused by many of the below mentioned “advances”
  • Medications altering our bodies
  • Frankenfoods – fake fats, fake sugars, GMO – Genetically Modified Organisms
  • Chemicals throwing off bodily processes – pesticides, herbicides, preservatives, artificial colorings, antibiotics, steroids in animals, pharmaceuticals in our drinking water, mercury in our fillings in our teeth!

Those are some of the culprits of weight loss difficulty. Now you know what to avoid or minimize your exposure to. Eat organic whenever you can and avoid the hormones and antibiotics. Re-stock your gut with probiotics either via supplements or fermented foods (sauerkraut, kimchee, cheeses, yogurt, kefir, raw milk…). Get a water filter for your sink and your shower (or whole house). Basically stay close to nature and your body will function as it is supposed to / divinely designed.

If you apply one of the above weight loss tips, you will make progress towards your goal of fast weight loss / fast fat loss. Apply many of the above diet tips and your fat loss will increase exponentially. Keep in mind, food is life – don’t abuse it.

Why Diets Fail

The main reason any diet fails is being unable to follow the diet.  The biggest reason for not following a diet is inability to control your appetite or hunger.  The easiest way to control your appetite is with an effective appetite suppressant.  Click on Easy Diets for the most effective appetite suppressant and fat burning weight loss product.  If you would like to see the easiest to follow and most effective diet plan yet, click on Every Other Day Diet .
